Shining a Light on Thyroid Disease: January Marks Thyroid Disease Awareness Month

January is Thyroid Awareness Month and it is a reminder to speak with your doctor about your thyroid’s health.

  • Approximately 20,000,000 Americans have some form of thyroid disease and about 60% do not know they have a thyroid issue.
  • There were about 45,000 cases of thyroid cancer in 2022.
  • Almost 1 in 8 women have a thyroid condition in their lifetime
  • Some symptoms of thyroid disease can include mood changes, eye pain or dryness, fatigue, concentration and memory issues, trouble sleeping and weight changes. 
  • What is the thyroid gland? The thyroid gland is found in the neck and makes chemicals that help your body’s metabolism.
  • What is hyperthyroidism? It happens when the thyroid makes too much hormone.
  • What is hypothyroidism? It happens when the thyroid does not make enough hormone.
